When it comes to matchless beauty and artistic treasures, Tuscany lives up to its reputation: rolling hills which are the epitome of pretty countryside; cities which hold much of the world's renaissance heritage; and a capital, Florence, which in itself boasts more works of art than those belonging to entire nations. Few venture further than the crowded heart of the region, but it's a real shame.
Tuscany stretches from the Apennines as far as the Tyrrhenian sea, where it gently slopes down with a coastline alternating sandy beaches and promontories. The Tuscan coast is especially famous for its archipelago, which includes the islands of Elba, Capraia, Giglio, Montecristo and Giannutri, among others. Islands of ferrous soil, light and colour, home to corals and dolphins; islands of history and myth, from the Etruscans to Napoleon; nature reserves lapped by an emerald-hued sea.
